Beale Street, Memphis
Silky O'Sullivan's, Memphis
|
Black Diamond 6p-midnight Tu-Th, 6p-1:30a F-Sa |
Looking for the blues? Here in the hometown of the blues, this club is a sure bet for the real thing. Live bands take the stage every night, making this small bar a big hit on Beale Street. Recent blues greats who have played here include Muddy Waters' former sidekick Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin. Look closely for the neon sign, because it's easy to miss this little gem on a street crowded with clubs and flashing neon signs. Great for the night, or a stop while bar hopping.

Legends
on Beale 6p-midnight Su-Th, 6p-1:30a F-Sa |
If
you can stand the Memphis weather, this Beale Street bar has one of the
biggest patios in town. Enjoy it in spring and fall, or with a cool drink
on late summer evenings. It is a great place to watch the crowds of tourists
and revelers go by, but often fills up and becomes a party, with customers
dancing and drinking on the patio to the music of local bands. After midnight
on Saturday this place becomes a hot spot for local college students.

Newby's
5p-3a Tu-Sa |
Highland
Street runs along the edge of the University of Memphis, but it is no
cutesy strip of boutiques and pizza places. And Newby's is not a haven
for wealthy, preppy kids, either. It has a feeling of reality, with a
heady mix of people and music. Local bands play here almost nightly on
one of the two stages. There is no telling what you might hear?it could
be folk or alternative rock?but it will almost never be top 40 or boring.

Specialty is gallon-sized drink 183 Beale Street Memphis, Tennessee 38103 Phone: (901) 522-9596 4p-1a M-Th, noon-2a F-Su |
If
the goats (kept outside in an empty lot next door) don't get you, then
the "Diver" will. The Diver is a gallon-sized drink specialty
served here. Not a place to go for dinner, this place packs in the hardcore
party crowd. If you're feeling brave, ask the bartender for a Fuzzy Leprechaun.
This bar hosts a raucous annual St. Patrick's Day celebration each March.
(By the way, the goats, which are mascots for the establishment, won a
permanent place in the bar only after city authorities concluded they
posed no threat to public health and safety.)

Welcome
to the New York style night club in Memphis, which offers different themes
almost every night. Come after work on a Wednesday night for some crazy
concoctions in the Martini Lounge. On Thursdays, groove to DJ Moises as
he plays a blend of salsa, meringue and latino beats. Don't miss the best
night; Super Saturdays with the hottest track remixes. If you get tired
of dancing, there is an outdoor beer garden to relax those tired feet
and enjoy some late night snacks.

J-Wags
1268 Madison Avenue (Between Claybrook and Bellevue) Memphis, Tennessee 38104 Phone: (901) 725- 1909 24 hrs M-Su |
Located
in respectable, artsy Midtown, this place has been in Memphis longer than
any other establishment catering to the gay population. It remains known
as the best spot to see a female impersonator show. Cher, Barbara, Diana
Ross - you can catch them all here and for a fraction of their Las Vegas
prices. The bar is open 24 hours a day, unusual in this fairly conservative
community, making it a great place to go if you're in jet lag and cannot
sleep. Drink specials change each night. The show is performed Thursday
through Saturday nights only.

Poplar
Lounge
2586 Poplar Avenue Memphis, Tennessee 38122 Phone: (901) 324-1233 11a-1a or 2a M-Su |
A
long-time favorite with Midtowners, this bar draws patrons from across
Memphis who like to party, especially mid-week when a lot of area bars
are more sedate. The emphasis here is the gathering of folks, rather than
trendy decorating. A friendly and eclectic atmosphere highlights this
watering hole, located between Midtown and East Memphis, and is a popular
gathering spot for singles. Live music is often featured. Bluegrass Memphis-style—with
drums and electric guitar backing up the fiddler—is a regular Sunday
night attraction.

Peabody
Lobby Bar
|
This
elegant lobby bar in the grand Peabody Hotel has been restored to its
original late 19th century glory, although with modern comforts added.
Couches and overstuffed chairs make for a relaxing place in which to enjoy
the player piano or the live music that takes place on weekend nights.
The lobby is crowded at 11a and 5p, when the famous Peabody ducks march
to and from their place in the lobby fountain. The best time to stop by
is late at night after an evening on Beale Street or at the theater. Limited
wine and beer is served at $4 and up, while coffee drinks go for $5.50.
