“Mouthwateringly good soul food!”
Review by: NolaAmy, Mar 22, 2008

This restaurant is worth finding. It's up Main Street on the trolley line in an area that is mostly abandoned. It is a precious storefront building with purple windowsills, an eclectic decor and the sweetest owner. BJ came out and gave each of our four family members a hug around the shoulders and a kiss on the head (we were already seated). This is a meat-and-three place; choice of meat, two veggies and bread. We all got the chicken, three of us the fried and one the baked. The chicken is cooked when you order. For sides, we all got green beans, two got mac-and-cheese, one got corn and I got the yams. The bread was hot water corn bread, a sort of flat corn bread that was delicious. To drink, BJ offered us Ghetto-Aid (it's on the menu), which is a super-sweet Kool-Aid. My daughter ordered it and said it was indeed sweet. My only regret is that we were too full for dessert as I so wanted to try the bread pudding! On our way out, I asked BJ if she would allow me to take her picture. "Hang on," she said, "Let me just get some lipstick on." She ducked in the back, indeed put on some lipstick, and came back up front for a great picture of her, me and my daughter. If you are in Memphis, this place is a must!

The Cupboard Restaurant
1400 Union Ave
Memphis, TN 38104
(901) 276-8015

Charles Cavallo's Cupboard restaurant is a Memphis favorite. We are located on Union Avenue in Midtown. The fried green tomatoes alone are worth the trip, as are the friendly warm smiles of the Cupboard's longtime servers. There are lots of other fresh vegetables to choose from, as well as crunchy corn sticks and corn muffins. Which of our desserts are the best? Well that's cause for arguement some like the fresh berry cobblers while others go gaga for our homemade lemon pie. Stop in today and decide for yourself.
